Functions of the Council
The Western Australian Reproductive Technology Council (Council) is established under the Human Reproductive Technology Act 1991 (HRT Act), and advises the Minister for Health on the administration this Act (s14) and the Surrogacy Act 2008 (Surrogacy Act) (s18).
The Council provides advice to the Minister for Health and to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the WA Health Department on issues related to Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) and Surrogacy and is also responsible for providing advice on licensing matters for ART services and for monitoring standards of practice.
The main functions of Council are to:
- provide advice to the Minister for Health and the CEO on issues relating to reproductive technology, and the administration and enforcement of the HRT Act and Surrogacy Act.
- review the Human Reproductive Technology Directions 2021 and guidelines governing ART practices and storage procedures undertaken by licensees, and thereby regulating the proper conduct of any reproductive technology practice.
- promote research, in accordance with the HRT Act, into the causes and prevention of all types of human infertility and the social and public health implications of reproductive technology.
